England along with Wales Placed Together for RWC 2027 Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was overseen by rugby legends including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

England and their Welsh counterparts find themselves placed in the same group for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, setting up a highly-anticipated pool stage clash in Australia. Completing the group in Group F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This pairing recalls their memorable clash in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at Twickenham played a part in the hosts' surprise group stage elimination.

Key Pool Pairings

Ireland and Scotland have likewise been drawn in a group together, replicating the situation from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, they secured a convincing victory, with Scotland unable to progress to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, who each impressed as underdogs in France, complete that Pool D.

Notably, the victors of both Pool D and Pool F are kept apart from defending champions and world number one the Springboks until the final, assuming the Springboks top their assigned pool.

Tournament Ramifications

Should the groups play out according to the current global standings, further top favourites like New Zealand and Les Bleus would also be kept apart from both the English and the Irish until the final.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the remaining highly-seeded nation on that side of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Tournament Hosts Draw Blockbuster Opener

Tournament hosts the Wallabies have been drawn alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Group A.

Australia will open the World Cup in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee match designed to jump-start the event.

In other groups, holders the Springboks have been paired with the Azzurri, Georgia and the Oaks. France are in a pool with Japan, future hosts the United States and Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Argentina will face the Flying Fijians, Spain and the Canadian team as the tournament grows to 24 teams from the twenty who took part in France.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a round of 16 stage for the very first time in the competition's history.

While the victor of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the game's biggest beasts early on, they will have to face the runner-up from Pool B – most likely the Italians – in the first knockout round.

Four of the remaining six group winners will face a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
