The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
