Patients Coming Off Slimming Jabs Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who come off popular slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users buying these medications must be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a reversion to original mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Experts suggest the mode of action of the jabs explains the heightened regain.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Testimonies

People who have come off the medication report a powerful return of appetite.

"I experienced a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly starving," said a patient.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Interest

Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians stress that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural changes.
