In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The September revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the New Political Partnership
According to the official pact, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Political Discussions Underway
In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with a number of major political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
