Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered those words in several conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes series against the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "weak men" observation subsequent to England suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of something special entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 chasing a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of play – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There's no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
